Online agent education

Is online education for you?

Perhaps you need to complete continuing education credits for your license. Or you’re uncomfortable putting together a Power Point presentation. Maybe want to gain some management skills.

You know the best way to reach your goals is to further your education. But who has time? Well, don’t be so quick to dismiss your goals of an MBA, bachelor’s degree or even the latest computer proficiency. Through online education, adult learners are balancing their lives and education. And e-learning may be just the solution you’re looking for.

This isn’t your father’s distance learning.

Today’s e-learning options are a far cry from the mail-in or video-based distance learning programs of the past, which left many students feeling isolated and waiting weeks for feedback.

A good e-learning course allows interaction, immediate feedback, review and reinforcement – important aspects of any class. This could include requiring students to answer questions, complete quizzes, review content and take tests.

Is this online class for me?

Before you sign up for a cyber-class, determine your needs. If you’re working on a specific skill, your path to e-learning will be different than if your goal is to complete a degree or certifications.

To brush up on a skill, look for an online school or e-learning portal (such as netg.com and click2learn.com). Class options range from building management and sales skills to technology and accounting courses. Web portal courses can cost as little as $50 to $100.

If your want to complete a degree, you should look to traditional land-based universities that now offer degree programs online. You won’t have to look far – try your local community college or state university. The cost is comparable to attending a traditional university.

As an insurance professional, you may need courses to satisfy licensing or continuing education requirements. InsuranceStudy.com offers a fairly complete program. Although you may not find your state listed, the site is working towards programs in all areas. Also, try your state’s insurance commission site for online certification information.

Some basic considerations

How do you learn best? There are several layers to a good instructor-led classroom, including reading, visualizing, listening and participation. Do you want to be asked questions you’re required to answer? Do you want to discuss material with other class participants? Make sure you consider which teaching methods will suit you best.

Finally, make sure the class fits your schedule. Can you leave the course and return to it? Do you need to start a section over if you miss one class or get sent on a two-week business trip? Is there a time restraint or attendance policy? Many online university programs require attendance like a regular class.

Convenient side effects

E-learning is still an emerging area. It’s constantly changing, like the technology it’s built upon. Nonetheless, the fundamentals of education are timeless. If you have a solid understanding of what you want to learn and a grasp of what type of learning suits you best, you should be able to find an e-learning program that fits your schedule. And as a convenient benefit, you’re bound to become more computer literate from the experience.
