06/01/2005: Breakfast of Champions fuels the mind while rewarding students’ hard work

A healthy breakfast is the most important meal of the day and a key ingredient to successful learning. A record number of Sun Prairie fifth and sixth graders will be rewarded for their outstanding study habits at the “Breakfast of Champions,” Thursday, June 2, 8:30-9:30 a.m. Students will also be treated to a visit from Wisconsin’s first lady Jessica Doyle at the free breakfast, sponsored in part by the Sun Prairie Business and Education Partnership (BEP) and held at General Casualty’s Sun Prairie campus.

During the 2004-05 school year, 239 students turned in all homework assignments on time and will be rewarded at the breakfast. Quarterly pizza and ice cream parties sponsored by the BEP helped feed students’ motivation throughout the school year. Business partners attended the parties and visited with students, who also received certificates recognizing their achievements.

“This program teaches our students important life skills like dedication, commitment and the importance of following through on projects, and it helps them develop strong study habits,” says Clark Luessman, Patrick Marsh Middle School principal. “Considering that students are assigned an average of 200 homework assignments each year, completing every one on time is truly a remarkable achievement.”

Doyle, a former teacher and strong supporter of literacy and education, will address students along with Sun Prairie High School’s Academic Excellence award winners and 4.0 graduates Liz Marshall and Brian Gaumont.

In addition to the Breakfast of Champions, General Casualty partners with the BEP in its Adopt-A-Class program, an educational program that pairs local businesses and employees with elementary school classes. Employees periodically visit the classes and assist with school projects and other activities.

“We support educational programs like Breakfast of Champions and Adopt-A-Class because they help students build a strong educational foundation that they can rely on during school and after they graduate,” said Hollie Bowker, General Casualty corporate relations manager. “This foundation and the strong work ethic that students develop through Breakfast of Champions will help them achieve personal, academic and professional goals.”
