08/26/2005: General Casualty reports damage estimates from recent tornadoes

General Casualty Insurance Companies has received nearly 60 claims as a result of last week’s tornadoes in southern Wisconsin and expects to pay out $4-5 million in losses.

More than 30 of the claims are for damaged homes, with most located in the Stoughton area and four that have been classified as total losses. The remaining claims include damaged autos, boats and a few minor business property losses.

To date, the company has already issued checks to many policyholders for immediate living expenses and to replace damaged items and begin repair efforts. In addition, many claims have already been settled.

“As soon as we received access to the damaged areas on Saturday, we brought in adjusters from our other locations and worked throughout the weekend to inspect all damaged property,” said Don Suominen, senior vice president of claims. “Our goal is to settle our policyholders’ claims as quickly as possible and to make our customers whole after a loss, and we’re happy to say that we have received many compliments from our customers and agents for our handling of this devastating catastrophe.”

Any policyholders of General Casualty who have not yet filed claims but believe they may have storm-related damage should contact their insurance agent or the company’s direct claim reporting center, ClaimLine24, at (888) 737-8256.

Company officials recommend that policyholders document damaged property and keep a record of all expenses relating to the loss in order to expedite the claims process. To ensure consumers are dealing with a reputable service person and don’t become a victim of disaster fraud, the Company also advises you to be wary of door-to-door sales people offering clean-up or repair services after a storm.
