Anne B. Smith, senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary for Winterthur North America, was elected to the United Way of Dane County board of directors. Smith was elected to the board at the United Way health forum and annual meeting Feb. 25 at the Madison Concourse Hotel. Winterthur North America is an umbrella organization that provides administrative services to General Casualty, Southern Guaranty and Unigard insurance companies.
A long-time supporter of health and well-being at General Casualty and in the community, Smith will chair the Healthy for Life community solution team for three years. The team is one of six committees helping to lead the United Way of Dane County’s “Agenda for Change.” The agenda outlines seven important changes that must be met in order to improve the community’s conditions.
“The United Way and Healthy for Life team are working together to make lasting, visible improvements in our community. I’m excited to help build a healthy community where residents can strengthen themselves mentally, physically and emotionally,” said Smith.
As chairperson of the Healthy for Life team, Smith will direct a team of 20 volunteers and oversee the investment of money, volunteer time and partnerships to help improve access to health care for the uninsured in Dane County. The team will make recommendations to allocate more than $1.3 million in donations. In addition, she’ll work with the Dane County Health Council, a coalition of local health care providers, to increase health care for the 32,000 uninsured Dane County residents. The team is also exploring strategies to help address health care and dental access issues, mental health support for children and teens and other health-related problems in the community.
In addition to chairing the Healthy for Life team, Smith will sit on the Community Building Vision Council. The council focuses on some of the overriding goals of the United Way, including building academic achievement and safe neighborhoods and reducing domestic violence and homelessness.
Prior to her board appointment, Smith served on the United Way’s campaign cabinet and the Sun Prairie Business and Education Partnership, Inc. She also volunteered on the board of directors for the YMCA and United Cerebral Palsy.
General Casualty is a generous supporter of the United Way of Dane County. The company and its employees donated $214,008 to the United Way in 2003, ranking sixth on the private sector donation list.
