04/21/2004: General Casualty, Winterthur North America host Bring Your Child to Work Day April 22

For the seventh year, General Casualty and Winterthur North America will host more than 75 of their employees’ children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews for Bring Your Child to Work Day on Thursday, April 22 at the companies’ Sun Prairie headquarters.

Tours and demonstrations will take place throughout the day, including the executive area, workout room, print center and mail room, computer room and help desk, mechanical rooms and employee resource center. Kids can participate in a short aerobics class and will be able to create a poster about their experience. They’ll receive a “goody bag” with games and activities to work on during the day as well.

“Bring Your Child to Work Day gives children the opportunity to spend more time with their family members and learn about what they do at work. They can learn more about what an insurance company does, too. We want to make the day fun, as well as educational, for both kids and adults.” says Nicole Korbisch, claims representative and president of General Casualty’s Employee Representative Committee, which organized the event. She offers the following suggestions to help make Bring Your Child to Work Day a positive and productive experience:

  • Take them on a tour of your work area and introduce them to your coworkers and manager.
  • Plan ahead and save up small projects they can work on, such as typing, photocopying and assembling materials.
  • If lunch isn’t available at your office, plan a special meal by yourselves or with coworkers.
  • Let them attend a meeting and ask them to take notes and type them up after the meeting.
  • Bring along some extra activities for them to work on so they stay busy.
  • Discuss the day with them at home that evening. Ask what they learned, if they can explain what you do, and what they liked best about the day.

In addition, children will participate in Bring Your Child to Work activities at General Casualty’s offices in Des Moines, Iowa; Milwaukee; Minneapolis; Kansas City, Kan.; Lincoln, Neb.; and Springfield, Ill.
