06/11/2003: Breakfast of Champions honors hard-working students

On June 5, 152 fifth and sixth grade students from Sun Prairie schools were honored at the annual "Breakfast of Champions" hosted by General Casualty Insurance Companies.

Co-sponsored by the Sun Prairie Business and Education Partnership, the breakfast rewards students who have turned in their homework on time throughout the school year. "As a teacher, I know that turning in every assignment on time for an entire school year is no small accomplishment," said Nancy Everson, the district's school-to-work coordinator and BEP board member. "This is a wonderful recognition event for the students, and it demonstrates General Casualty's commitment to our educational system and community."

Students visited General Casualty's corporate headquarters in Sun Prairie, had breakfast, listened to guest speakers, and won prizes donated by local businesses and Sun Prairie High School.

Sun Prairie High School's former head football coach Mike Hahn was this year's guest speaker, and he emphasized the importance of the "four Ls:" listen, learn, love and laugh. Hahn was joined by the new head football coach, Brian Kaminski, the high school mascot and SPHS athletes. Three seniors who maintained 4.0 grade point averages encouraged students to continue their good study habits. And former Sun Prairie football star and current Duke University football player Jim Moravchik spoke to the students about the importance of hard work in school and sports. Todd Birkrem, BEP president, served as the master of ceremonies.

This was General Casualty's sixth year hosting the event. "We love hosting the Breakfast of Champions!" said Hollie Bowker, General Casualty's corporate relations manager. "It celebrates students' hard work from the past school year and shows them that good study habits pay off. And hopefully, this recognition will motivate the students to continue on the path they've started in order to reach their future goals."
