10/09/2003: Students encouraged to apply for General Casualty scholarship

General Casualty's scholarship applications are now available for download. Twenty-one college students and high school seniors will be awarded $1,000 to help pay for their undergraduate education.

Seven scholarships will be awarded to students residing in Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, and Wisconsin. In addition, seven will be awarded to dependents of General Casualty's 1,700 employees and seven to dependents of employees of the 100 independent insurance agencies that market General Casualty's products and have achieved Premier Partner status.

The General Casualty Insurance Scholarship Program, which was introduced last year, aims to financially assist academically talented students who are enrolled (or plan to enroll) in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two-or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school. Awards are renewable up to three years or until a degree is earned, whichever occurs first, on the basis of satisfactory academic performance (2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale). Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Recipients will be selected by Scholarship Management Services, a program of Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America (CSFA), which General Casualty hired to administer the program and independently award the scholarships. The program uses standard CSFA recipient selection procedures including:

  • consideration of past academic performance and future potential
  • leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • work experience
  • statement of career and educational aspirations and goals
  • unusual personal or family circumstances
  • an outside appraisal

Financial need is not a determining factor.

The application process begins Oct. 1. The first 300 applications postmarked between Oct. 1 and Feb. 15, 2004, will be considered. Applications should be sent to CSFA. Recipients will be announced by CSFA on April 1, 2004. For additional information, please contact CSFA at (507) 931-1682 and refer to the General Casualty Scholarship Program.
