On May 30,166 fifth and sixth grade students from Sun Prairie schools were honored at the annual Breakfast of Champions hosted by General Casualty Insurance Companies.
This year-end event, co-sponsored by the Sun Prairie Business and Education Partnership, serves as a reward for students who have turned in their homework on time throughout the school year. "This great event reinforces to kids the importance of good study habits," said Nancy Everson, the district's school-to-work coordinator and BEP board member. "We're very fortunate to have a business community that is so supportive of the school system."
Students spent the morning visiting General Casualty's corporate headquarters in Sun Prairie, having breakfast, winning prizes donated by local businesses and the high school, and listening to guest speakers.
This year's feature speaker was Sun Prairie High School head football coach Mike Hahn, who emphasized the "four L's": listen, learn, love and laugh. He was joined by the high school mascot, SPHS athletes and Jim Moravchick, a 2001 Sun Prairie graduate who now attends Duke University. As in past years, SPHS seniors who have maintained a 4.0 GPA (Amber Mautz and Nate Weber) talked to the younger students about the importance of good study habits, reinforcing that hard work can help them pursue their dreams. Dan McIlroy, BEP president, served as master of ceremonies.
Thursday's Breakfast of Champions marked General Casualty's fifth year hosting the event. "It's an honor for the company to help encourage students to perform at their fullest potential, boost their self-esteem and promote the importance of education," said Hollie Bowker, General Casualty's corporate relations manager.
