Twenty-one $1,000 scholarships will be awarded through a new educational program sponsored by General Casualty Insurance Companies. Seven scholarships will be awarded to seniors residing in Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, and Wisconsin. In addition, seven will be awarded to dependents of General Casualty's 1,700 employees and seven to dependents of employees of the 100 independent insurance agencies that market General Casualty's products and have achieved Premier Partner status.
The General Casualty Insurance Scholarship Program, new this year, aims to financially assist academically talented students who plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school. Awards are renewable up to three years or until a degree is earned, whichever occurs first, on the basis of satisfactory academic performance (2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale). Awards are for undergraduate study only.
Recipients will be selected by Scholarship Management Services, a department of Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America (CSFA), which General Casualty hired to administer the program and independently award the scholarships. The program uses standard CSFA recipient selection procedures including:
- consideration of past academic performance and future potential
- leadership and participation in school and community activities
- work experience
- statement of career and educational aspirations and goals
- unusual personal or family circumstances
- an outside appraisal
Financial need will not be considered.
The application process begins Oct. 1, 2002. Scholarship applications can be downloaded via generalcasualty.com under "About Us" and "Our Community." The first 300 applications postmarked between Oct. 1, 2002 and Feb. 15, 2003, will be considered for a scholarship. Applications should be sent to CSFA. Only scholarship recipients and non-recipients from the first 300 applications received will be notified of their status by the end of April 2003.
