How to file a homeowners claim

If your home or other property has been damaged or someone is injured on your property, you’ll want to do the following to file your claim:

  • Contact emergency services, such as the police if you’re the victim of a crime or the fire department if you’ve had a fire. Be sure to get a copy of the police report if one is filed.
  • Report your claim to General Casualty immediately. Contact your independent agent or General Casualty directly through ClaimLine24. If possible, provide your policy number and contact information.
  • Temporarily repair your property to protect it from more damage, such as installing a new lock on your door or covering a hole in the roof. Save the receipts for these expenses for reimbursement. Keep damaged items for inspection.
  • If you must relocate, keep records and receipts of your additional expenses, such as a stay in a hotel or temporary apartment.
  • General Casualty will send you a claim form to complete. Please return it quickly so we can process your claim promptly.
  • A claim adjuster will contact you to discuss your claim. Depending on the type and size of claim he or she may inspect your property.
  • You’ll receive a check promptly after a settlement agreement is reached. You may also receive an advance on your settlement, which can be used to begin paying for repairs and other necessities.

Note: This information serves as a general overview of the claims process and refers to the majority of personal insurance claims. Because each claim situation is unique, the information provided may not apply to your specific situation. If you have questions about a claim, please contact your independent insurance agent or General Casualty.
