Scholarship Program

Program Details

Eligibility

The scholarship is open to:

  1. High school seniors attending high schools in the states where General Casualty has offices. (Alabama, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina and Wisconsin.) Students must plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school.  
  2. Dependent* children (age 24 or under) of full-time General Casualty employees who are high school seniors or graduates who plan to enroll or students who are already enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school.
  3. Dependent* children (age 24 or under) of full-time Premier Partner Agency employees who are high school seniors or graduates who plan to enroll or students who are already enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school.

Preference will be given to General Casualty policyholders in the event of a tie.

*Dependent children are defined as natural and legally adopted children or step-children living in the employee’s household or primarily supported by the employee.


Awards

Up to twenty (20) awards of $1,000 each will be granted in the following categories:

  • Four (4) awards will be granted to high school seniors attending high schools in states where General Casualty has offices (as long as there are qualified applicants). More than one award may be granted to a high school. Awards are renewable up to three years or until a degree is earned, whichever occurs first, on the basis of satisfactory academic performance (2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale).
  • Eight (8) awards will be granted to children of General Casualty Premier Partner Agency agents/employees (as long as there are qualified applicants). Awards are renewable up to three years or until a degree is earned, whichever occurs first, on the basis of satisfactory academic performance (2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale) and continued agency Premier Partner status and parental employment at such agency.
  • Eight (8) awards will be granted to children of General Casualty employees (as long as there are qualified applicants). Awards are renewable up to three years or until a degree is earned, whichever occurs first, on the basis of satisfactory academic performance (2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale) and continued parental employment with General Casualty.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

2007 scholarship recipients


Selection Criteria

General Casualty is not involved in the selection of recipients. We have a contract with Scholarship Management Services, a program of Scholarship America, to administer the program and to select the recipients. The program will utilize standard Scholarship America recipient selection procedures including:

  • Consideration of past academic performance and future potential
  • Leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • Statement of career and educational aspirations and goals
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances
  • An outside appraisal


Financial need will not be considered.


Applications

The postmark deadline of February 15 has passed and the applications for the 2008 program are no longer being accepted. Only scholarship recipients and non-recipients from the first 300 applications will be notified of their status by the end of April 2008.

The application period for the 2009 scholarship program will open on November 1, 2008 until the postmark deadline of February 15, 2009. Applications for download will become available at this site on November 1.
